Wow what an amazing day, it is hard to believe that we only
spent one day in the beautiful city of New Orleans because we did so much
today. We woke up really early and
headed out to city. I think the first thing we noticed was how beautiful the
buildings were, walking around we were talking about how it didn’t even feel
like we were in the same country. New Orleans is so full of life and
excitement, there is never a dull moment.
So we walked around, looked in all the shops, tried on some of the
masks. Then we went to a famous café called café de monde, where we and about
200 other tourists sat and ate beignet’s (French doughnuts). The task is tying
not get covered in the powdered sugar that this fried bread is covered in, I
succeeded but David was covered with white powder for most of the day. Next we continues to walk around, we
saw several people wearing the same shirt that all the “The Amazing Race” on
them so we were really excited thinking that they were filming it there, but it
was just a local thing.
We
were lucky and took a nice break to listen to a free concert put on by the
National Park of Jazz Music. I didn’t even know there were parks that were not
actually outside parks, this one was like a museum for Jazz music, but we were
able to by our national park passport and get out first stamp which was
exciting. The concert was really good. It was not traditional jazz music like
you would think with all the brass instruments; it was all string like guitar,
steel guitar and mandolin. It was different and I’m not going to deny that it
did make me sleepy, but David wanted to stay and it was raining outside so we
listened on.
We decided to be extreme tourist,
(since you couldn’t already tell we were with our noses in a map and me
snapping pictures every block) and go on a historic ghost tour of New
Orleans. I was a little afraid it
was going to be scary but it was really interesting and we learned a lot about
New Orleans history, such as the French quarter burned down three times and
strangely enough all three fires started at the exact same building, they have
two fire hydrants in front of it now haha, We didn’t see any ghost but we heard
a lot of good stories and our tour guide did some pretty good accents.
So
we kept on going through the rain, luckily I remembered my rain jacket,
unfortunately David did not. After the tour we walked around again and then we
went to the famous Preservation Hall. This
is an old building that looks even worse on the inside but it is home to some
of the fathers of Jazz such as Louie Armstrong and the Preservation House Band.
This place was lined down the block to get into see a jazz legend. We waited in
line with pain in our legs from walking all day but when we finally sat down
and heard the music it was all worth it. I have never heard Jazz like this
before it was amazing, you just can’t help but smile and dance along. David was
in his element he loves Jazz music and really loved this place. It was exactly
what you would think of when you think of New Orleans.
As
we were walking around I realized that New Orleans is exactly as I have always
imagined it, it was one big party and it was even mardi gras but there were
beads flying every where, music playing and people dancing. We saw a man
walking in a bikini, about 6 weddings all with their own parades, we saw people
“earning” beads, and scary voodoo shops. It was amazing and I love this city, I
can’t wait to come back.
We
finally made it back to the car, and I was a little worried that the car
wouldn’t be there since we didn’t park in what seemed to be the area’s of town
but Thank God it was there because there was no way my feet would let me walk
all the way back home.
(sorry mom if this has spelling errors I had to do it in a
hurry and upload it so we could
get on the road lol)
Oh
and David I made a new friend, an adorable little puppy named Fonzee we wanted
to take him with us but he would miss his mommy. He was Barbara’s puppy who we
stayed with in New Orleans.
